EN→DEThe iPad Mini 7 is compact and fast, and its Apple silicon processor is built to last for years. It's an excellent companion tablet for Apple users looking for a device to go with them. It also performs well for quick work, like editing a video in CapCut or a social media post in PS Express. Apple appears steadfast in making Apple Intelligence its future, but the road has been full of obstacles and stumbles. While Apple promises a great generative AI toolset, the company currently has a lot of balls in the air. If you're on the fence, buy the iPad Mini 7 for the entertainment tablet it is, and not what Apple promises it could be. If you're a power user looking for a more capable tablet, you'd do best to look elsewhere.

EN→DEThe iPad Mini 7 is a mobile entertainment powerhouse in a lightweight, ultraportable chassis. Its stellar display and fantastic audio make for an immersive experience watching movies or playing games, especially with a compatible controller like the Razer Kishi Ultra. While the iPad Pro and iPad Air aim to replace your laptop, the iPad Mini sticks to what tablets are best for: entertainment and relaxation. If you're looking for a tablet for mobile gaming, reading, and streaming movies and shows, the iPad Mini 7 is the way to go. Its smaller display makes it much more comfortable for those tasks than the larger iPads without sacrificing performance. However, if you want to use your tablet for word processing, video editing, or work-related tasks, you should get the iPad Air or iPad Pro, which have more robust keyboard compatibility.

EN→DEThe iPad mini (2024) is the best compact tablet you can buy but that doesn’t mean you should buy it. At essentially £500/$500 for the cheapest model, it’s no longer a no-brainer and remains the most niche option in Apple’s iPad range. For some people, it will be the perfect option but for many, there will be a better choice – whether that’s Apple’s standard iPad or an Android alternative. I’d say you’ve really got to want a tablet this size, weight and power in order to justify the cost of an iPad mini.

EN→DEIf you already own the last-generation iPad mini, the answer is probably no. You don’t need the improved performance of the A17 Pro to browse the web, reply to emails, play games, and catch up on shows. The A15 Bionic in the last iPad mini is perfectly capable of that. In fact, possibly the only thing that the new iPad mini can do that the last iPad mini can't is Apple Intelligence. Really, the main reason why you might want to update is because of Apple Intelligence. But since it isn’t available for me to test, it’s impossible for me to say right now if it’s worth upgrading for it. Remember I said this new iPad mini was tricky to review? This is why. My main issue with the iPad mini is that its display is starting to look dated and could really use an upgrade.

EN→DEThe iPad mini is a fantastic tablet. If you have a fifth-gen iPad mini, you should hold off on upgrading. For those looking for a small tablet that can handle reading and Netflix streaming, double as a digital diary, and play games like a champ, this is arguably the most joyful device out there. The software is silky smooth (though Apple can do a lot better), the build is lovely, the battery life is surprisingly solid, and there aren’t any red flags that could dissuade an enthusiast from giving their cash to Apple. It’s just not pulling any remarkable stunt that puts its predecessor to shame. On the unsavory side of things, the sixth-gen iPad mini doesn’t fix any lingering problems. The screen is still not bright enough for comfortably consuming content under sunlight.

EN→DEIf you are in the market for a compact tablet that does everything a tablet is supposed to do and beyond, without skipping a beat, the iPad mini is the de facto choice; it has been the de facto choice for a while now, and the iPad mini 7, with its latest A17 Pro chipset and support for Apple Intelligence, only doubles down on this lead. You can't go wrong with the iPad mini 7. For ₹49,900, Apple has actually made quite a value-for-money device. Yes, the design is not fresh, and the front-facing camera placement could have been better, but these can be ignored for the experience you get at large.

EN→DEThe biggest advantage of the iPad mini 2024 remains its compact form factor. It fits in almost any bag and is the ideal on-the-go companion. However, this advantage can also turn out to be a disadvantage: Anyone who wants to write longer texts or work with several apps simultaneously will find themselves reaching the limits of the small display quickly. Another point of criticism is the cut-off widgets and apps that are not optimally adapted to the small screen. This is not a major problem, but it does tarnish the premium impression slightly. With an entry-level price of $499 for the 128 GB Wi-Fi version and $649 for the cellular version, the iPad mini 7 is no bargain, either.

EN→DETwo weeks in, my first reaction is still the same. I want this iPad Mini to run Android and dock into a smart display-like form factor when not in use. Or, more succinctly, I want a Pixel Tablet Mini. If Google could bottle up the magic of the iPad Mini’s form factor, its portability, and its powerful performance and then mix that with the always-charged, idle photo frame, and smart speaker aspect of the Pixel Tablet, I’d have my ideal digital companion around the house and outside of it. Basically, take the existing Nest Hub, make it an inch larger, and split the speaker from the display. Add the same versatile case of the original Pixel Tablet with its simple hook design, and that’d be perfect. I know I’m asking for the impossible now, though.

EN→DEThe iPad mini (A17 Pro) builds on its predecessor with a faster A17 Pro chip, 128GB base storage, and updated connectivity options like WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, but most of its core features remain unchanged from the 6th generation. Its 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD is still sharp and colorful but lacks advancements like OLED or a 120Hz refresh rate. Battery life holds steady at 8–9 hours, though the lack of faster charging is noticeable. For those upgrading from older models, the mini’s portability, one-handed usability, and Apple Pencil Pro support make it the most compact and tablet-focused option in the lineup. However, existing 6th-gen owners may not find enough new here to justify the switch. At $499, it’s a capable but incremental upgrade.

EN→DEIs the 2024 iPad Mini a bit too safe? Definitely. But that doesn’t make it any less of a great device. The iPad Mini is still a fun little tablet, and it will still do all the iPad things you expect it to for the foreseeable future. Crucially, it also supports Apple Intelligence, though it remains to be seen if that’s something that many users really care about. Regardless of features or performance, the iPad Mini is still the best ultra-portable tablet out there.

EN→DEWe previously wrote about how the iPad Mini 7 should be a prompt of sorts for Android manufacturers to step up their game within the compact tablet space, and for good reason. Apple’s newest addition to its iPad line comes with impressive performance, and is mostly carried by its internals such as the A17 Pro chipset, RAM configuration and battery. The addition of AI might even be enough to entice users who value such features on their device. However, a starting price of $499 might raise a few more eyebrows than usual, especially when considering factors such as the so-and-so display and basic camera.

EN→DEThe iPad mini is a very niche device for a very specific type of user. It's not an iPad that has been mini-fied to be cheaper — it's a premium iPad that has been made smaller for those that desire such a tiny tablet. In other words, if you are one of the people who would find use for it, you probably have your mind set on it. In fact, you probably own an iPad mini 6th gen. Is this one better and worth going for? Well, it will definitely work great with Final Cut and Logic for iPad if that's what you want to do on the small screen. We imagine that most people that use an iPad mini for some kind of productive work are the ones that sketch and write notes with the Apple Pencil on the go.

It’s an integral part of what I do, and I’m sure my fellow journalists can relate to this. I often joke that you’re not a journalist if you don’t carry a notepad with you. However, as a tech journalist writing about personal technology for a living, I also try to review new products and incorporate them into my daily routine to see how I can benefit from them. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the new iPad mini, and honestly, what intrigued me more than the usual features associated with the iPad was the idea that I could replace my pen and notebook with it.

EN→DEApple actually included a fair amount of upgrades in the iPad mini–but if you were hoping for Apple to unveil a new approach with the iPad mini, you’ll need to keep hope alive for possibly a few more years. Basically, the new iPad mini is a chip upgrade to support Apple Intelligence and not much more than that. If you have the 6th-generation iPad mini that works well, and you’re wondering about upgrading, the question to ask yourself is how much you want to use Apple Intelligence. Try it on another device if you can and gauge how much you use it, then you can figure out if you need a new iPad mini. If you don’t care about Apple Intelligence (even after trying it), chances are you won’t care about the new iPad mini, either, unless your 6th-generation iPad mini needs repairs and you’ve been putting them off.

EN→DEUnless you're looking for an all-in-one media consumption companion tablet and don't mind a lackluster display, most people will be better off consuming content on their smartphone over the iPad mini (2024). This doesn't necessarily make it a bad tablet, but it's designed with a specific type of iPad user in mind. Most people are better off using their smartphone instead of shelling out the cash for an iPad mini. After all, if you have an iPhone or a recent Android device, the display is likely OLED, features a higher refresh rate, and is nearly the same size as Apple's tiny tablet. As far as I'm concerned, Apple's bigger iPads are where it's at.

EN→DEMeanwhile, the basic non-Mini iPad has no 2024 upgrade yet despite being two years old. I'd expect, and want, exactly the same features this Mini has on the 11th-gen iPad to come: Pencil Pro support and Apple Intelligence compatibility. In the meantime, entry-level iPad shoppers are going to get compromises. The Mini is the basic set of upgrades I'd expect for a multiyear tune-up, and hopefully, Apple doesn't cut any more corners on the next basic iPad. I'm not won over by Apple Intelligence yet, and by the time Apple's AI features evolve to be truly, deeply useful, there might be newer iPads to consider. Maybe an entry-level iPad update, launching next year, would be an even better fit. In the meantime, anyone hoping for a not-too-expensive iPad for kids might consider the Mini for its relative updates and slightly lower cost than the Airs… but it's still not super-affordable enough to replace the basic iPad.

EN→DEThe things I enjoy about the iPad mini are all present and correct in this 2024 update. It's still an arguably perfect-sized companion device, neither too expensive nor too large to make you question why you're carrying both it, and your laptop, in your bag. The screen is great for video — markedly bigger than even that of an iPhone 16 Pro Max — but in a device still comfortable to hold one-handed. And, if your handwriting is more legible than mine, an iPad mini with Apple's stylus makes a fantastic note-taking device. At the same time, having my finger summoned to the Touch ID button feels clunky compared to other Apple devices seamlessly using Face ID. The jelly scrolling of the iPad mini 6 hasn't been fixed, and the camera improvements are marginal.

EN→DEIf you’re looking for a smaller format tablet, the iPad mini remains a great choice. Thanks to the chip upgrade, this is now a hugely powerful device that can easily fit inside a jacket pocket. It’s perfect for travel or just keeping in touch on the move. What the iPad mini A17 Pro isn’t is a laptop replacement. This is very much designed to touch and draw. There’s no Magic Keyboard option as there is for the Pro and Air models. Even the base level iPad has a Magic Keyboard Folio accessory. For the mini your only choice is a third party model. If you want to explore Apple’s Intelligence features when they launch later this year, the iPad mini is the cheapest way to get access to them.

EN→DEThere isn’t a better small tablet on the market than the iPad Mini 7 and even though this isn’t a huge upgrade if you picked up the iPad Mini 6, its beefier internals and support for the forthcoming Apple intelligence still make it a worthy upgrade. Performance is faster, there’s support for a newer Wi-Fi standard, no more 64GB storage option and double the memory – plus it works with the superior Apple Pencil Pro. The biggest decision you have to make is whether you want this – which of course benefits from its dinky dimensions – or the £100/$100 pricier iPad Air M2. Both are great, though I would go for the Air – unless size is the key factor.

EN→DEThe variety in iPad sizes is impressive. You can get everything from a 13-inch giant iPad Pro down to an 8.3-inch iPad mini. Most people probably live in the middle with the popular 10.9-inch iPad Air or the new 11-inch Air, but that little one with the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina Display has its adherents. It's an almost pocket-friendly device that's popular with pilots, artists, ardent notetakers, social media scrollers, students, and readers. It's the color reading screen for those who don't want to read comics on a black-and-white Kindle (though that new Colorsoft does change things, am I right?). EN→DEThat being said, it’s nice to see the iPad mini get an update. It’s been three years since the last one and it deserves its place in Apple’s tablet lineup. This is a tablet that’s compact enough to sling in a bag without a second thought, and yet the screen is large enough to deliver more expansive media output than your phone, albeit not quite at the same level of quality. I also love the idea of using the iPad mini as an overpowered note-taking, sketching and reading device. Coupled with an Apple Pencil Pro and the smarts of Math Notes and (eventually) Apple Intelligence, it makes the ultimate digital notepad. EN→DEIt is nice that the company upgraded it enough to support Apple Intelligence, but since most people use the mini for pretty targeted tasks, there is a lot there that will likely go unnoticed. And like the iPhone 16 series, most of the AI software isn’t out yet and won’t come to Canada for another month after the U.S. (unless you change your device’s region to USA English). I can’t hate this iPad mini that much. I easily used my old one enough over the last three years to justify its price tag, but it would have been nice for Apple to upgrade the screen more since that’s the main aspect people interact with.

EN→DEHonestly, I was half tempted to copy and paste my iPad mini 6th-gen review, and in all-caps add IT’S GOT AN A17 PRO NOW, before nipping off for an early lunch. Because barely anything else has changed. Apple might then point to Wi-Fi 6E over Wi-Fi 6 and add that it’s doubled the storage at each price point, the latter of which means the mini no longer starts with a miserly 64GB. These are good things. Neither moves the dial from ‘whatevs’ to ‘party time’. But does that matter? Not really. Taken on its own merits, the new iPad mini is an objectively good – if pricey – tiny tablet with plenty of power. And although the small screen might degrade certain experiences – movies; complex games; writing; comics – it’s my favourite iPad for faffing about online, reading prose, casual gaming and doodling.

EN→DEAnd wait, hang on: if you’re doing a lot of handwritten math or writing a ton of emails, you’d likely rather have a bigger screen or a keyboard attachment, wouldn’t you? The new Mini ostensibly exists for a user who wants the absolute best pen experience, a million new AI-enabled productivity tools, and the absolute smallest screen that gives them both, no matter the tradeoffs. That’s a pretty tight Venn diagram, if you ask me. There are so many other interesting things Apple could do with the Mini. It could give it iPhone Pro Max-level imaging and a Camera Control button and make this the device it hopes Hollywood will use to make movies.

If you’re buying your first iPad Mini or upgrading from a fifth-generation model or older, I feel confident saying you’ll love this tablet.
